ABSTRACT

The publication is edited by the ANCIM (National Association of Minor Islands Municipalities) with the scientific collaboration of the Universities of Rome Sapienza and Siena, Politecnico di Torino, CNR, Legambiente and ENEA – with which the Association has signed a Collaboration Agreement.

The Association represents the 35 Municipalities of the Italian Minor Islands, distributed in seven Regions (Campania, Lazio, Liguria, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany), with 220 thousand residents permanently and a much higher number of temporary residents (tourists).

Sun, sea and wind, but also biomass and waste are considered the energy sources of the future but are still underused in the smaller islands. Using both consolidated and innovative technologies such as those that will allow the exploitation of marine energy potential, the smaller islands could achieve energy autonomy and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This book illustrates the technological options in the energy field, which also affect the waste, water and transport sector. The regulatory and procedural obstacles that stand in the way of the diffusion of renewable energies are also underlined, suggesting specific paths for a context such as that of the smaller islands.
